Rita Howell to Assume Directorship at
Dubois County Tourism Commission
The Dubois County Tourism Commission has
announced that Rita Howell formerly of St. Joseph Hospital will assume the
position of the new Tourism Executive Director.
The Dubois County Tourism Commission is authorized
under Indiana Statute to promote tourism for the county. Funds for the commission are provided by a
room tax whereby all lodging establishments charge a higher tax then the
normal sales tax. The state then
distributes the additional percentage back to the tourism commission in the
county that collected the tax.
As Huntingburg and all of Dubois County look to
diversify our economy, the importance of tourism as an economic tool is
growing. Partnerships not only with
DCTC, but also with other area attractions are important to the Chamber as it
looks to make the area a tourism destination.
The Tourism Committee of the Huntingburg
Chamber of Commerce is very pleased with the decision of DCTC. Ritas experience in marketing and her
attention to detail will be a definite asset to the tourism commission. Rita had also served on the Board of the
Chamber (President in 2000); and therefore will be familiar with its operations
in further developing promotional partnerships.
DCTC is responsible for the promotion of the
Olde World Christmas in Southern Indiana event that includes the Christmas
Stroll in Huntingburg, Christkindlmarkt in Ferdinand, and OTannembaum Days in
Jasper. The chambers and merchants in each
of these communities organize the festivities while the tourism commission
ensures that information is distributed.
Rita will begin her duties in mid-August and
will be overseeing the activities of two other employees and working with seven
board members including Mitch Clark and Mary Brown of Huntingburg.
The Chamber of Commerce shares a website
with the City and the Huntingburg Foundation.
We invite Chamber members to look at the site and offer suggestions so
that we can make sure that it is user friendly and informative. Let us know if you would like a link to your
website.
Newsletter to be Electronically Mailed
With the new capabilities of high speed
Internet, the Chamber will soon be able to offer the newsletter electronically.
Monthly the Chamber sends a newsletter
to all of our members. While we would
like to see this newsletter made available to all the employees within your
company we know that this is not always feasible. However by using electronic mail capabilities we will be able to
reach a wider range of people at a lower cost.
Later in the year, a form on which you
may list all of your employees that you would like to receive the newsletter
will be distributed. Please make sure that
all of your department heads are part of this address listing. The newsletter will still be available in
written form for those members who do not have Internet capabilities.
Hoosier Replay Story
Hoosier Replay, a northeastern Indiana
magazine dedicated to Hoosier sports, visited Huntingburg the week of July
21. The magazine originally intended to
do a story on League Stadium for their August issue, but after spending the day
talking to Huntingburg sports enthusiasts, they have stories for several issues.
Our residents are our best selling
tools. Thanks to those people who took
time from their busy schedules to share their stories. Remember, not everyone lives in a town as
great as Huntingburg, be proud.
Publications
The Chamber of Commerce is currently
working on two new publications for the city of Huntingburg.
The first is an updated map that will
include general information on the City.
Maps are the most asked for items when people visit the Chamber office.
The second a walking tour brochure of
Huntingburgs historical downtown. This
brochure will include information on the architectural styles of the buildings
along with brief histories.
Agri-Tourism
Southeastern Indiana Small Business
Development Center (SBDC) will sponsor a workshop on the Introduction to
Agri-tourism on August 13, 2003 in Madison, IN.
Questions on what agri-tourism is, why
do it and the benefits for farmers and tourism will be discussed. Examples of regional agri-tourism businesses
include the local wineries and the farms near Starlight, Indiana.
Board Changes
Mr. Bob Brown of The Brown Antiques has
agreed to serve as Vice-President for 2003-2004, while Mary Mundy-Uebelhor of
The Purple Plum has accepted the position vacated Christine Buening.
Congratulations to both, we know they
will do a great job.
Breakfast Series
The Huntingburg Chamber of Commerces
breakfast series will kick off its third year in September. The Chamber is interested in what speakers
and topics members are interested in for this year. Please contact the Chamber with your suggestions.

Huntingburg Foundation Receives Lilly Money
The Huntingburg Foundation has received
the balance of funds from the Lilly Endowment GIFT V challenge.
During the fall of 2001 and all of 2002,
the Foundation worked at raising $615,000 to receive $630,000 from Lilly. The final payment arrived July 21 and was
immediately invested for the future growth and development of the
community.
The Foundation celebrated on July 26,
with many of its donors including several area businesses and Chamber members
including Styline, Touch of Class, Masterbrand, Steinkamps, Farbest, Uebelhor
Development and German American Bank.
Craftsman Needed
The Huntingburg Merchants invites artisans and
craftsmen downtown on Saturday, September 20 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm to demonstrate
