A Donors Guide to Giving (With information provided by Indiana Giving Ventures IGIVE) With the inception of the Lilly GIFT program, the number of community foundations in Indiana grew dramatically. Today there are 94 community foundations or affiliate funds that are actively working with the Lilly GIFT program. Collectively they hold endowments over $1 billion. Many have reached the take off point and are growing rapidly. The list of community needs is long, from literacy to affordable housing, from daycare centers to senior centers, from future growth to celebrating our history. Many people give money inconsistently, moved by a disaster, a heart wrenching appeal, or the lure of a last minute tax deduction. But it pays to take a more systematic approach toward giving, since with planning, your money will go farther and have a more substantial impact. Spend some time asking basic questions such as, why do you want to give? What kind of good works do you value most? What kind of legacy do you wish to leave for your family and friends? When looking at a charitable entity, you should also consider factors that indicate that the organization operates efficiently and meets basic guidelines of charitable integrity. Following are eight steps to help you decide what organizations you might want as partners in your giving. Obtain printed materials from the organization. Look for a mission statement and indicators of the goals and objectives of the organization. Investigate funding by other community organizations or large companies in the area. This is a good indicator that others have evaluated the organization and find it trustworthy. Request an annual report to determine that financial statements are clear and available. Does the annual report give you a picture of the organizations financial standing? Determine that fund raising costs are reasonable. National watchdogs suggest that at least half of an organizations funds should go into programs. Review the board member list. Look for people you know to be community leaders. Ask how often the board meets. Talk to people. Talk to anyone you know that has been involved with the organization as a benefactor, or volunteer. Considering volunteering for the organization before making a donation. Check the Internet by going to the IRS website for nonprofit organizations at www.irs.gov/search/eosearh/html. Nonprofits must be designated as a 501(C)(3) for you to receive a charitable deduction for your gift.Visit the organization and simply talk to the staff.
