Jacob Geiger being an avid hunter, had heard from his father Capt. Frederick Geiger, of the great hunting grounds in what became Dubois County, and first came to the area to hunt bear.  He was so pleased with the area that he decided to make it his permanent home.  His father had amassed a considerable fortune as one of the first incorporators of a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, providing the means for Jacob to purchase 1,920 acres in 1837.  After settling in what was to become Huntingburg, Jacob freed his slaves who joined other freed men at the Freedom Settlement south of Huntingburg.  In 1852, Geiger built a brick home on the corner of what is now Sixth and Geiger Streets.  The home still stands today.
