Leaving a Legacy

The list of community needs is long, from literacy to affordable housing, from daycare centers to senior centers, from future growth to celebrating our history. Many people give money inconsistently, moved by a disaster, a heart wrenching appeal, or the lure of a last minute tax deduction. But it pays to take a more systematic approach toward giving, since with planning, your money will go farther and have a more substantial impact. The Huntingburg Foundation can help you to determine what kind of legacy you wish to leave for your family and friends?

Huntingburg Foundation Participates in

Lilly GIFT Program

The Huntingburg Foundations intended mission when begun in 1977 was the preservation of the city of Huntingburgs first municipal building, the Old Town Hall on Geiger Street. For more than a decade concerned citizens worked at restoring the historic structure and making it the first building in Dubois County to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

At approximately the same time as the building was being rededicated, Lilly announced its GIFT program. The Board of Directors of the Huntingburg Foundation realized that the Foundation could expand on its mission and do much towards the enhancement of the quality of life for the residents of Dubois County. Therefore, in 1991 it participated in Lillys GIFT Phase I, becoming one of the first community foundations to join a network of organizations committed to building their communities, assessing and prioritizing local needs, and mobilizing community support to address those needs.

Late last year, Lilly Endowment announced Phase V of the Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) Program. With GIFT Phase V, the Huntingburg Foundation must raise $615,000 by December 31, 2002. If successful in meeting this challenge, Lilly will give the Huntingburg Foundation $630,000, making more than $1.2 million available for the Foundation to invest for future distribution of grants to area charitable organizations and scholarships to students.

Lillys GIFT To the State of Indiana

In 1990, Lilly Endowment launched an initiative to strengthen the states existing community foundations and encourage the founding of new ones. The goal of the initiative, called GIFT (Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow) was to help Indiana communities establish a lasting legacy of self-reliance for addressing local problems. To date, the results of GIFT are impressive and appear on track with this goal. Indiana has become a recognized leader in the field of charitable giving and home to one of the countrys largest concentrations of community foundations of which the Huntingburg Foundation is one a true testament to the energy and dedication of Indianas citizens.
